MØAA - Euphoric Recall, dreampop eterea

Recensione e intervista alla songwriter di Seattle

7 Aprile 2021

- English version -

MØAA's debut album is a work in between dream-pop and a darkwave with captivating unworldly features.
The songwriter Jancy Rae has worled on this recording between Seattle and Venice. In the latter, precisely at the Fox Studio Venice, she concluded the writing recording and mixing, jointly with Andrea Volpato (New Candys).

The songs recall the right sound to get lost inside the Venician "calli" (the narrow streets typical of Venice) at sunset, after enjoying a good art exhibition, swinging by "bacari" (the typical taverns of Venice) and the right mood to breath the most ancient, audacious and authentic mood of the City in the Lagoon.

Euphoric Recall, this is the title of the recording, is a mix of echoes of a past not too far and a gaze on the contemporary, full of "chiaroscuro" shades: lights, shadows, glare and fog, packed in a journey to understand time by time, song by song.

We have interviewed the artist, so as to discover with her MØAA's sound itinerary.

1) The sounds of these recordings swing between lights and shadows. Where did this inspiration derive from?

I've always been drawn to dynamic ranges of emotion or extremes... The multidimensionality of the human experience.. Really high highs, and really low lows. A lot of this range is also present in classical music, and since my first instruments were piano and violin this likely crept into my writing process, however it was not a conscious choice or decision.

2) How has your way of composing songs changed since you moved from the USA to Venice?

It has pretty much stayed the same...I have the same set up in my bedroom studio that I did back in Seattle and typically start with a drum machine beat and writing melodies on the guitar, and then a bass line. Only recently I started writing with only a synthesizer and programmable drums to see if it takes me to a different place, but I find that I still find the most inspiration writing first with guitar and bass and later incorporating synth.
During the recording and writing process of this album there was also the influence and direction from Andrea (Fox Studio Venice) who influenced or co created the structures of some of the songs, but he was also contributing in this way while the demos were in their early phases in Seattle.

3) Are there any readings which inspired you in the production of this recording?

There was one particular book that I read thoroughly, studied, and brought others through by reading it together. It was a book focused on having a spiritual experience by following a series of steps and I can say this definitely influenced me while writing the songs in this album. As I was waking up and facing reality I had an influx of new insights that often were channeled through songwriting during that period.
