“Delusions”: vi presentiamo il Heavy Sad-Core-Gaze delle Circus Trees

Prima di spiegarvi perchè Delusions è il disco che meglio incarna questo 2020 vorrei fare una piccola premessa. Capisco che per molti di voi il fatto che esista una band di sole ragazze adolescenti, per di più tutte e tre sorelle, possa aver creato sgomento ma personalmente la cosa che più mi ha stupito è la qualità di questo progetto. Per la precisione le Circus Trees sono Finola (15 anni), chitarra e voce solista, Giuliana (18) alla batteria e Edmee (14) basso e tastiere. Sia chiaro si sente un forte richiamo a Culdreams e Julien Baker ma a mio modesto parere quando le Circus Trees cominciano a suonare creano qualcosa di magico.

Detto questo non vorrei soffermarmi troppo sulla giovane età delle sorelle McCarthy perchè siamo quì per valutare la musica e non chi la compone. Delusions è un disco cupo, malinconico ma che alla fine lascia trapelare un piccolo raggio di speranza e ti ricorda che per quanto sia un brutto momento prima o poi passerà. Ditemi voi se questo non incarna perfettamente l'atmosfera di quest'anno che non vediamo l'ora di lasciarci alle spalle.

Quarata minuti in soli 6 brani dove la musica ronza, macina, galleggia il tutto cullato dalla struggente voce di Finola e quando finalmente gli strumenti si incontrano vieni travolto dalla loro maestosa potenza esattamente come in Wasted Air brano di apertura del disco. Wicked è il pezzo che più ho apprezzato, con quella delicata linea di basso che si sposa perfettamente con le sdolcinate parole di Finola per poi esplodere nel finale. In Breath la voce è sofferente ma in suo soccorso arriva Giuliana con degli impulsi strozzati che sembrano quasi provenire dal fondo dell'oceano offrendo un barlume di luce nell'oscurità.

Confronting Time rappresenta la perfetta alchimia tra le tre sorelle, dove gli strumenti si fondono per creare la magia citata in precedenza mentre in Memories si può notare la maestosità della voce di Finola, che dimostra un incredibile maturità vocale ad un solo anno di distanza dal precedente EP Sakura. Il tutto culmina in Till We're Dead con un puro fuzz che eletrizza ed avvolge l'ascoltare negli ultimi otto minuti di questo incredibile disco.

Delusions è uscito il 14 Agosto per la Five by Two records quella che potremmo definire la label di famiglia poiché gestita dal padre Robert aiutato dagli altri due figli Eoghan e Declan.

Le Circus Trees sono una band che con il loro "Heavy Sad-Core-Gaze", così batezzato dalle testate estere, può dare nuova linfa alla scena shoegaze che dopo il ritorno dei grandi nomi del passato sembra sempre più ancorata alle sue radici.

“Delusions”: we present you the Circus Trees’ heavy sad core

Before explaining you why “Delusions” is the record that best fits this 2020, I want to make a preamble. I understand that, the fact that exists an only teen girls band, all three sisters, might have astonished many of you. But personally, the thing I was most surprised of was the quality of this project. Precisely, the Circus Trees are: Finola (aged 15), guitar and solo voice; Giuliana, (aged 18) drums; Edmee (aged 14), bass & keyboard. In them you can hear a reference to Culdreams and Julien Baker. But in my modest opinion, when they start singing they make something magical.

Said this, I’d prefer not to talk much about the young age of the McCarthy’s sisters, we are here to value the music rather than who makes it. “Delusions” is a dull and melancholic record that, in the end, lets you see a glimpse of hope and reminds us that doesn’t matter how much a time can be bad, it’ll go, sooner or later. Now, tell me if it doesn’t perfectly fit the atmosphere of a year we can’t wait to leave at our back.

40 minutes in only 6 songs in which the music buzzes, grinds and floats the whole thing, cuddled by the heartbreaking Finola’s voice. And when finally the instruments get-together, you feel overwhelmed by their power, just like in “Wasted Air”, the opening track of the record.

“Wicked” is the tune I have most appreciated, with that delicate bass line that perfectly matches with Finola’s sweet words, which explodes in the final part. In “Breath” the voice is sufferent, but then arrives Giuliana with her choked impulses coming from deep in the ocean offering a glimpse of light in the dark. “Confronting Time” represents the perfect alchemy between the three sisters: here their instruments blend and make the above said alchemy; while in “Memories” you can see the magnificence of Finola’s voice, who shows an incredible vocal maturity at only one year from the previous EP “Sakura”. Everything culminates in “Til We Are Dead”, with a pure fuzz that electrizes and embraces the listener in the last eight minutes of this amazing record.

“Delusions” was released the 14^th of August for Five By Two Records, which we may define a family label, managed by their father Robert, helped by his two sons Eoghan and Declan. 

The Circus Trees are a band that, with their “Heavy-sad-core-gaze”, so called by the foreign (in the Italian perspective, n.o.t.t.) magazines, can give new lymph to a shoegaze scene which, after the return of the big names of the past seems more and more anchored to its roots.
