Ai Weiwei libero! Voina liberi!

Call against the repression of the artists by S.a.L.E.

FREE AI WEIWEI! Free Voina!

Since the 3rd of April, the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is under arrest in China. While we are writing, on the web is spreading the news that he seems to be “disappeared”. It’s even hard to understand clearly where he could be detained. Ai is shockingly accused of tax evasion, pornography circulation and bigamy. These absurdities are a gross attempt to hide what is obvious: Ai is in jail for political matters, because he expressed critical opinions against the regime of Beijing and because he didn’t give up his freedom of speech and expression.

Ai Weiwei is not the only case of persecuted artist.

Oleg Vorotnikov and Leonid Nikolaev, members of the Voina Collective, were arrested in Moscow on the 10th of November. They’ve been released in February, but their odyssey isn’t over. Voina is a collective composed by artists/activists whose work consists in continuous actions of creative subversion against the Russian political system (which is responsible for the death of Anna Politkovskaya and many more free voices of the national media). At the
end of March, some members of this collective were held during a pacific demonstration and violently beaten by the Russian police. Nowadays, another bench warrant against Oleg has been issued.

S.a.L.E. Docks considers it incumbent to take a stand on these evident injustices. Particularly now, less than one month before the opening of the Biennale of Art, it feels necessary for the whole artistic community to make a stand against political persecution of the artists all around the world. The anachronistic repression carried out by some governments reflects the equally anachronistic subdivision of the international exhibition in national pavillions. What is boundless, on the contrary, is the common need for democracy, which is expressed globally also through artistic practices.

Sign for the release of Ai and the end of the persecutions against Voina.
